Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

will making my music magazine i tried to include as many conventions as i could what make it look like any music magazine in the media today. Conventions are things such as coverlines, masthead, barcode, main image and date.

I also have included cover lines on my front cover, these show what is included inside and are some of the main stories involved in the magazine. on these cover lines i included artist names who feature in the rock music industry and who will draw the readers of my magazine in thats why i used 'Noel Gallagher' and 'The Artic monkeys'. i placed my cover lines to the right of the main image as this is used on many magazines.

I added a barcode to my magazine to make it look more authentic. i added this to the bottom left corner, i placed the price, issue and date in the right hand corner. i did this after looking at other magazines i could tell this is a amain convention what needs to be included.

I included a main article what i placed centre of the magazine going from right to left, i put this in bigger font so it draws the reader in. i used a different font colour so that it stands out from all of the other font on the front cover. i used the headline 'Will Lawton speaks out' this may intrigue the reader to   buy my magazine, I also used the word 'Exclusive' this showing that it includes an article no other magazine would have.

I included a masthead as it is on of the main conventions of any magazine, i then was able to use the same name i used on my masthead throughout the magazine to keep up a consistent theme the whole way through. Many music magazine readers will be able to tell that it is a music magazine from the name 'Vibes' and not just from looking at the images and cover lines that i have used.

Question 2

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine represents the music genre 'rock' as i have tried to represent throughout my magazine by the images and the model that i have used. I have dressed my model so it also appeals to the target audience that i am aiming my magazine towards. On both my content and front cover pages i have used popular artist names within the rock genre this will appeal to my target audience, i used artist names such as Noel Gallagher and The artic monkeys. Seeming the age range that i have aimed my magazine towards i have added social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and Youtube as the age range is late teens to early twenties which most of my audience will be familiar with these social networks. When i was asking my questions i tried not to use any informal lanuguage as i did not want to stereotype teenagers.

Question 3

Question 3: what kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I could use corporations such as Bauer and social feeds to distribute my magazine; Bauer is the largest owned publishing group in Europe. They are largely respected and viewed as one of the industries biggest innovators. They own and publish the music magazine Kerrang this just shows the quality of the company as Kerrang is a very well known magazine. I would use social feeds such as Facebook and twitter, as you are able to advertise your magazine to a large audience. Using social feeds you are also able to promote your magazine for free as people may share it or make a post about it.

Question 4

4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
The age range of the audience I have targeted my magazine is a large range. One of the reasons for this is that the magazine is priced at a fairly affordable price, the reason for this is because of the age of the audience as it is targeted for late teenagers and early twenties this mean that they would be in school, college or in university. I would say that my magazine is based at both genders although it may be more based towards the male gender, as the colours that I have used are dark. The magazine is aimed at people who like to listen to rock this is shown by the articles on the front cover, by using artist such as noel Gallagher and the artic monkeys.

Question 5

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

  • I have used a bold masthead so that it is clear and visible for people to be able to see on the shelf.
  • I have used a clear colour scheme of grey, white and gold which i have used consistently throughout my magazine.
  • I wrote exclusive underneath my main article headline this implies to the reader that they will be able to read things that they wouldn't know this overall makes them want to buy my magazine.
  • i wrote my main headline in a much larger font size so that is clearly visible over any off the other writing on the front cover.
  • i used a teenager as my main image as that is part of the audience who my magazine is aimed towards.

  • the subheadings that i have used on the articles on my context page are artist related to the genre that the audience of my magazine would listen to and recognise.
  • i have tried to attract my magazines audience by the presentational conventions  that will draw them in, this is shown by the colour, text and imagery used within.

Question 6

Question 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Whilst creating my magazine I have used programmes such as: Blogger as It allows me to post the work that I have completed within the lesson online it also allows me to do work at home then post it on my blog for my teacher to see. I have used Photoshop whilst completing my magazine, will doing this I have learnt how to use a lot of different tools within the programme, the main tools that I have to used are the croop tool, adding text tool and also tools to add affects on my text. The equipment that I used will taking my photos where the camera to take the images for my front, content and double page spread images. I used a computer so I was able to add and edit my images on the programmes that I have said above.

Question 7

7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
PRELIM FRONT COVER                    MAIN FRONT COVER

Since I first designed my prelim magazine front cover to my main magazine cover. I have learnt a huge variety of different editing skills. I have looked at a huge range of magazine that have had an input on to my final design of my main front cover. I mainly looked at magazines such as ‘NME’ as rock is the genre of my magazine. By doing this research it had an input of the colour scheme that I have used throughout my magazine.  In my prelim cover I just used basic font styles, the magazine did not really have a very good colour scheme as I just decided to use the first colour that I tried out, where as now I have been able to get a colour scheme by looking around at different magazines and trying out different colours before I chose the ones I am using now. The colours what I used are white and a brownish gold, this is so that the text stands out off the background therefore attracting the attention of the reader. Some of the skills that I have learnt was how to added different affects around my text such as shadows, colour overlays, bevel and emboss. I have also learnt how to add affects to my image as I added a grain affect to make my image look vintage. I have learnt how to add a number of layers to this makes my magazine look more professional. So all in all I have used a much larger advanced range of skills and magazine conventions on my main cover and also on my content and double page spread, this making it look a lot more professional then when I only knew how to use basic skills on my prelim.

More Audience Feedback

Stephen Mcdermot- " Looking tidy rhyce, it does look professional but spice it up on the context page by adding some colours, bolding and highlightin etc, maybe throw another image on the the double page spread  just to spread the writing out more its a lot to take in at once. Last thing it looks like will is coming out as gay with the main headline title(nothing wrong if he is like). But overall i would say that you magazine is fairly well presented and looks professional.

Will Lawton- " I like the location of the image as it gives you a good insight to what the style of the magazine is, it looks well layed out and easy to read, you just need to do more on your content page.

Jen Smyth- " Your cover lines on your front cover need to be smaller because everything is drawing you in at the minute rather than all of them! need to start adding text onto your double page spread  also you need to add some page numbers? also same with your contents i think that the text needs to be smaller and you need to add social platforms.

Audience Feedback

Kirstie Levell- " Firstly is your music magazine aimed at the gender males? I like how you have kept a consistent theme throughout in order to make the magazine come across as professional. maybe underline or change the colour of the important information on the front so that the reader reads those parts first? Your contents page needs to include icons for example, the twitter and facebook ones.you also need more articles involved as thats what the contents page is about. its good that youve added page numbers so that the audience know exactly where to turn to. also in relation to the articles, you need more because every rock music magazine i have had hold of is quite thick so you just need more.

Karl Graham- " The location of where you have took your shot is great, the model looks like he is giving a badboy look, but your text could do with some effect.

Michael Duffy- " Not many bright colours have been used, white is  plain and boring, and the front cover could have been straight and not on an angle. But overall the text is layed out out well making it look professional.

Change to front cover

One of the other changes have made on my front cover is, i have removed the Will Lawton new album text as i already have Will Lawton speaks out in large font so it will just be repeating Wills name, i have also changed the font style as the new font makes the text easier and more clear for the audience to read, i have also placed it differently as it provides a balance between the image and the readers ability to read text giving more clarity.

Changes to my front cover

I have decided to change the writing from white to gold, as it makes it stand out and makes it more eye catching to the audience.  I choose this front as it is clear and sharper, using just white font throughout makes my front cover look plain and boring so by adding colours it looks more like a style model that i have been looking at.
